Design and Display
The Samsung Galaxy A51 follows the same style theme as the Galaxy A50s. The body is made entirely of plastic and is extremely light (172g) and thin (7.9mm). The shiny body easily shows fingerprints, but on our Prism Crush Black model, they’re not too noticeable. Additionally, the back cover has a slightly rough surface. Thankfully, Samsung includes a case with the phone.
This is the first Galaxy A-series phone with an Infinity-O display, which is the biggest change. The display has a single hole in the upper middle, like the Galaxy Note 10+ (Review). Although Samsung didn’t make many changes to the body design, we like how the hole-punch display makes this phone look more expensive. With a full-HD+ resolution, the Galaxy A51’s Super AMOLED screen makes bright colors and good sharpness. Frontally, it stands out because of the thin edges all around.
Battery life and performance
Everyday use of the Samsung Galaxy A51 is a lot like using the Galaxy A50. We really liked the thin and light design. Although the layout was easy to use, it didn’t feel very smooth. Occasionally, we saw a little lag in the system movements. The benchmark speed was about the same as what a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 or 665 SoC would do. To Samsung’s asking price, though, that’s not very impressive.
According to our HD movie loop test, the Galaxy A51’s 4,000mAh battery gave it a good runtime of 14 hours and 55 minutes. The battery easily lasted a full day of normal use, and we still had enough power left over for a half-day session. We charged the battery to 67% in an hour thanks to the fast charging feature. Somewhat more than two hours were needed to fully charge it. This charger is pretty fast, but not as fast as others in the same price range, like the Redmi K20 Pro, which can charge up to 80% in an hour.
Cameras
The Galaxy A50s already had three types of cameras, but Samsung has now added a new 5-megapixel portrait camera. The main sensor has 48 megapixels, the wide-angle camera has 12 megapixels, and the depth sensor has 5 megapixels.
New buttons have been added to the camera app in One UI 2.0, which means it works a little differently. Now, most of the shooting options are in the “MORE” menu, but you can still add them to the main viewfinder interface if you need to.
Photos taken by the main camera are oversampled at 12 megapixels by default, but you can shoot at the full 48-megapixel quality if you need to. The choice for aspect ratio hides this option. Images of things in the middle of the frame could be captured in great clarity by the Galaxy A51 when there was enough light. In contrast, things near the edges tended to look a little fuzzy and were softer overall.
